Overview

The Mozilla Human-Scale AI Incubator is a funding and support initiative created by the Mozilla Foundation for builders developing specialized, community-focused, and smaller-scale artificial intelligence technologies. The programme aims to support alternatives to dominant, resource-intensive, and large-scale AI systems by backing projects designed around specific real-world contexts, local operations, data control, and privacy. Selected participants receive financial support alongside tailored coaching, workshops, expert connections, and access to the Mozilla Festival.

Who can apply

The initiative is open to ambitious teams and builders who are creating purpose-built artificial intelligence technologies tailored to particular communities, users, and problems. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong product-community fit by considering the contributors, partners, and users who will sustain and shape the technology.

What you get

Selected projects receive $300,000 USD in non-dilutive funding for a 12-month period of intensive support starting in April 2027, meaning participants do not give up equity. Projects that show strong progress may qualify for an additional $200,000 USD and an extension of tailored support for two more years, bringing the potential total to $500,000 USD over three years. Participants also gain entry to a global cohort, one-to-one guidance from Mozilla staff, networking opportunities with technologists and funders, and a platform to showcase their work at the Mozilla Festival.

Requirements

Applicants may use AI tools solely for supportive tasks such as translation assistance, brainstorming, or language improvement, but submitted applications must reflect the applicant's original voice, ideas, and work. Complete responses generated by AI or applications that appear heavily AI-generated are prohibited and may undergo further review.

How to apply

The selection process consists of multiple stages, beginning with an Initial Project Proposal where applicants must demonstrate the value of their Human-Scale AI alternative. Only a small group of shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full application following this initial review phase.

Key dates

The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, November 20, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8). The initial support phase and funding for selected projects begin in April 2027.
