Overview

The AI Economy Institute at Microsoft has launched its fourth global research funding opportunity through the AIEI Senior Fellows Programme. The initiative invites proposals investigating the economic and organisational impact of artificial intelligence, with a specific focus on AI and Jobs: Designing for Augmented Work. The programme explores how organisations can use artificial intelligence to improve human productivity, transform workplace structures, create new economic opportunities, and reshape labour markets. Selected research teams also gain opportunities for international collaboration, academic publication, and engagement with industry experts and policymakers.

Who can apply

This opportunity is open to qualified researchers affiliated with accredited universities and research institutions worldwide. Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent terminal degree at the time of application, which may include professional doctoral qualifications such as an MD, JD, or DrPH. Each proposal can include a maximum of two Principal Investigators, and all Principal Investigators and co-Principal Investigators must meet the academic eligibility criteria. Interdisciplinary research teams are strongly encouraged to apply.

What you get

Selected research teams receive a research grant of USD 75,000 issued as a single research gift per approved project. In addition to financial support, participants gain access to opportunities for international collaboration, academic publication, and engagement with industry experts and policymakers.

Requirements

Proposals must examine the organisational conditions that determine how artificial intelligence creates economic and social value, focusing on five priority research themes. These themes include the delegation of tasks and accountability in management, designing for augmentation and innovation across tasks and skills, building organisations and workflows people embrace, preserving entry-level employment and professional development on the first rung of the career ladder, and exploring AI-mediated discovery, markets, and value creation. Researchers may submit empirical research, comparative studies, and practical recommendations. Only one award will be issued per selected proposal.

How to apply

Applicants must submit their research proposals to the AI Economy Institute by the specified deadline. Proposals must be prepared by researchers who meet all stated academic and institutional affiliation requirements.

Key dates

The application deadline is November 30, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time. The fourth research cohort operates during the 2026 to 2027 period.
