Overview

The Bennington College Young Scientists Awards 2026 celebrate exceptional high school students in grades 9 to 12 who think critically and creatively about STEM. The awards recognise work that shows originality, curiosity and scientific inquiry, challenges conventions and reflects a distinct point of view. Topics can range from pollinator diversity in local gardens to the effects of drought stress on plant growth.

The category is Natural Sciences. Entrants submit a visual illustration that reflects their own understanding of an aspect of the natural world. It could express a scientific concept, depict elements of nature, or be a poster reflecting independent research. Artificial intelligence may not be used in any part of the submission.

What you get

Cash prizes in each category are $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third. A distinguished designation, worth $250, goes to particularly strong original submissions that did not win a top prize.

First place winners who enroll at Bennington receive a four-year full-tuition scholarship. Distinguished designation recipients who enroll receive a four-year half-tuition scholarship, and finalists who enroll receive a $25,000 annual scholarship for four years. Winning and distinguished entries may be featured on Bennington's website, social media and publications, and remain the property of the student.

Who can apply

The awards are open to students in grades 9 to 12 worldwide. Students who have already graduated from high school are not eligible.
