Overview

The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, together with the ASPRS Foundation, provides financial support through student scholarships, a professional development award, and a graduate research grant for the 2027 award cycle. The programme is designed to foster academic advancement, research innovation, and professional growth in geographic information systems, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and geospatial information science.

Who can apply

Applicants must hold active ASPRS membership to access these funding streams. The 12 student scholarships and the $25,000 Geospatial Science Research Grant require applicants to be student members enrolled in undergraduate or graduate geospatial science programmes. The $800 Fairness Fund Award is available to student members, early-career professionals, and academics who are within five years of obtaining a geospatial professional role, encompassing both ASPRS Student Members and Regular Members. For the research grant, preference is given to doctoral candidates who intend to pursue academic teaching careers.

What you get

The funding offerings include 12 student scholarship awards possessing a combined monetary value of $61,800, alongside a collection of named awards and fellowships such as the Robert E. Altenhofen Scholarship, James M. Anderson Scholarship, Abraham Anson Scholarship, John O. Behrens Scholarship, Robert N. Colwell Fellowship, William A. Fischer Scholarship, Government Services Scholarship, Lyman J. Ladner Memorial Scholarship, Francis H. Moffitt Scholarship, Kenneth J. Osborn Scholarship, Ta Liang Award, and the Paul R. Wolf Scholarship. Additionally, the Fairness Fund Award supplies $800 to help recipients overcome financial obstacles to professional growth. The Geospatial Science Research Grant provides a one-year award valued at $25,000 for graduate-level research.

Requirements

Candidates must submit their applications digitally by signing into their myASPRS accounts to access the appropriate forms. Eligible individuals may apply for up to three separate scholarships during the application cycle. Applicants must also arrange for two recommendation letters from professionals or faculty members who can evaluate their academic qualifications, research background, and professional capabilities. Referees are required to submit these letters directly using a separate online form and do not need to hold ASPRS membership.

How to apply

Submissions are processed through the online application system available via individual myASPRS member accounts. Candidates must complete the relevant forms and ensure their chosen referees upload the necessary recommendation letters through the designated referee submission link prior to the set deadlines.

Key dates

The application window for student scholarships and the Fairness Fund runs from October 7 to October 26, 2026, with the recommendation letters for these categories due by October 30, 2026. Applications for the Geospatial Science Research Grant are accepted from October 7 through December 1, 2026, with the accompanying recommendation letters due on December 22, 2026. Recipients of the 2027 awards will be honored during the ASPRS Annual Meeting held in Salt Lake City, Utah, in February 2027. Finalization of the research grant with the recipient institution occurs by March 30, 2027, followed by the official grant commencement on April 1, 2027.
