Wallace Fellowships 2027-2028 at Harvard University (Funded)
Overview
The Wallace Fellowships are for scholars who explore the historiography and impact of the Italian Renaissance in the modern era, from the 19th to the 21st centuries. They are made possible by a grant from The Lila Wallace - Reader's Digest Fund and are hosted at I Tatti, the Harvard Center in Florence. Projects can cover a range of topics, from historiography to the reaction to, transformation of and commentary on the Italian Renaissance and its ties to modernity. Projects on museum and collecting history are welcome, as are those on the survival of the Renaissance in modern art and architecture (including photography and landscape architecture), literature, music, philosophy and political thought.
I Tatti gives Fellows the time to pursue their studies with minimal obligations and interruptions, together with ample scholarly resources. Fellows are expected to join the wider community at conferences, lectures and concerts. The fellowship is residential and lasts 4 or 6 months, and up to four fellowships are awarded each year.
What you get
The grant is USD $5,200 per month, plus a one-time supplement of up to USD $1,800 toward relocation costs. Fellows must live in the Florence area and spend at least three days a week at the center. When possible, a rent-free apartment is set aside for the Fellow, with charges for utilities. If none is available, a housing subsidy helps offset rent.
Who can apply
Applicants must already hold a PhD and upload a scan of the certificate, and may not be working on a second PhD. They should work only on the project they applied with and not edit other book or article projects at the same time, although the project may be a segment of a larger one. They need to be conversant in English and have some familiarity with Italian. Priority goes to early and mid-career scholars. Projects may address the historiography or impact of the Renaissance in any field, including art, architecture, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion and science, and most of the research must be possible in Florence. Scholars from all nations are welcome, with special consideration for candidates who lack regular access to research materials and facilities in Italy.
How to apply
Applications can be written in English or Italian and are submitted electronically. Scholars may apply for only one type of fellowship at I Tatti per academic year.
