TWAS Visiting Expert Programme 2026/2027
Overview
The TWAS Visiting Expert Programme 2026/2027 supports visits by internationally renowned scientists to institutions in developing countries, especially the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Its aim is to give institutions and research groups with limited outside contacts the chance to build long-term links with world leaders in science and so develop capacity in their country.
Under the programme, host institutions can invite internationally renowned experts in areas of science other than mathematics and physics to collaborate on research and training. The visiting expert works closely with faculty and students to strengthen existing activities or help set up new lines of research. The expert may also give lectures and seminars to research students, supervise students, conduct research and discuss future collaborative partnerships. After the visit, the expert and the host institution each provide comprehensive reports on the impact on the host institution's educational and research programmes.
What you get
TWAS provides the visiting expert with the most direct round-trip economy class travel. The host institution is expected to cover local expenses.
Who can apply
Institutions in developing countries apply to host a visiting expert. Only people who have gained international recognition in their field of science are considered. Because the programme strives for equal opportunities, nominations of women are particularly welcomed.
How to apply
Institutions complete the online application form and upload a brief CV of the visiting expert of up to 10 pages with a publication list, a letter from the visiting expert describing the research and teaching programme they could support at the host institution, and a supporting statement from the head of the host institution. Templates are available in the online form.
