Overview

The Training Initiative for Modelling Epidemic Response in Africa is a capacity-building project funded by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership 3 under the Global Health EDCTP3 programme. Operating from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2029, the initiative addresses the uneven availability of mathematical and statistical modelling expertise across regions and the concentration of modelling capacity outside Africa. The project aims to train approximately 50 African fellows through a 12-month blended learning programme designed to improve infectious disease prevention, surveillance, and control.

Who can apply

The fellowship is intended for early- and mid-career researchers and public health professionals in sub-Saharan Africa who are committed to applying modelling approaches to infectious disease control, subject to official eligibility criteria. Target participants include professionals interested in infectious disease epidemiology, outbreak preparedness, mathematical modelling, public health research, and evidence-informed health policy.

What you get

Participants take part in a 12-month blended learning programme that combines in-person training blocks, online learning, thematic workshops, remote mentoring, group work, applied projects, and evidence generation. The training model incorporates exposure to artificial intelligence-supported modelling approaches, supervised internships where feasible, and collaborative work to translate scientific findings into formats that policymakers can understand and use.

Key dates

The overall project period runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2029. The application deadline is October 15, 2026.
