Overview

The Southeast Asia Research Group (SEAREG) is launching a Postdoctoral Fellowship Program that begins in the summer of 2027. One Fellow will hold a 12-month position at one of four partner institutions located in Southeast Asia. The programme aims to give scholars of Southeast Asia training, networking and field research opportunities that improve their competitiveness on both academic and non-academic job markets. The Fellow will strengthen their research agenda while contributing to the academic life of the host institution, will be mentored by a member of the SEAREG Executive Council, and will have their work showcased at SEAREG's annual Southeast Asian workshop in the summer of 2027.

What you get

The fellowship offers a competitive salary and a small fund for research expenses. It also supports travel to SEAREG's Southeast Asian workshop at the start of the fellowship.

Who can apply

Applicants must have completed their PhD within the three-year window before the fellowship begins, between May 2024 and May 2027, and must have received the degree from an institution in North America, meaning the United States, Canada or Mexico. Their dissertation research should have engaged seriously with Southeast Asia as a region, and their ongoing research agenda should align with SEAREG's priorities as set out in its constitution. Eligible fellows will have completed a PhD in a social science discipline such as political science, sociology, economics or a related field. Fellows are not necessarily expected to study the country of their host institution, but their research proposal should explain why the host university is an excellent fit.

How to apply

The application requires a one-page cover letter and a two-page research proposal. The proposal should cover what the applicant hopes to accomplish during the fellowship, how they will engage the host institution, who their mentor at the host will be and why, and what outputs they intend to produce. It must be accompanied by a letter of support of up to two pages from the host mentor, who must be full-time, permanent faculty and can support only one application. Two writing samples highlighting scholarship on Southeast Asia, such as published articles, working papers or dissertation chapters, and two letters of recommendation are also required.

Key dates

All materials are due by Sunday, 1 November 2026 at 12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (U.S.). The fellowship begins in the summer of 2027.
