Overview

The Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford, on behalf of the Nuffield Medical Trustees, is appointing exceptional early-career researchers to the new Nuffield Medical Fellowships. The fellowships are open to applicants worldwide and are based in Oxford. They suit early-career researchers who are moving into, or have recently reached, full research independence and who have outstanding potential to advance medical knowledge through outcomes that directly benefit physical or mental health. Applicants may come from any medical research speciality and may be clinically qualified or not.

Fellows become full members of a department in the Medical Sciences Division. Most of their time goes to the fellowship-funded research programme, with flexibility to spend up to eight hours a week on clinical duties or other activities that support career development. A distinctive requirement is to build a collaboration with a partner research institution in a Commonwealth country outside the UK.

What you get

The fellowships provide up to 500,000 pounds per year to cover the fellow's salary and research costs. The post is fixed term for 5 years in the first instance, extendable up to 8 years. Non-clinical pay is Grade 10RS, between 65,336 and 75,439 pounds per year with a discretionary range up to 84,663 pounds, depending on qualifications and experience. Clinical pay is equivalent to grade E82 for consultants.

Requirements

Applicants need a PhD or equivalent research qualification, significant postdoctoral experience and a proven ability to lead an independent research programme, and evidence of high-quality, impactful medical research such as first or senior author publications, patents or contributions to health practice or policy. They need experience of line management or supervision and a strong record of winning and managing external research funding, including as principal investigator. They should have a clear five-year research vision that fits a department in the division, an existing or planned collaboration with an institution in a Commonwealth country outside the UK, and a commitment to a positive research culture.

Clinical applicants also need full and specialist GMC registration with a licence to practise, or eligibility to register within six months of interview, and a Certificate of Completion of Training or equivalent evidence.

Key dates

The closing date is Monday 19 October 2026 at 12 noon BST.

About University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. Teaching there is documented from the late eleventh century, which makes it one of the oldest universities in the world, although its exact founding date is unknown. It has no single central campus, and its buildings are spread throughout the city. Every student belongs to a college, and the colleges operate alongside the university's academic departments, which are grouped into divisions.
