Overview

The Daphne Jackson Trust is inviting applications for a three-year part-time Daphne Jackson Research Fellowship co-funded by the MS Society UK, to be held at any UK university or research establishment. The fellowship is for researchers interested in multiple sclerosis research who want to return to their research careers. The Trust will secure the remaining funding from an additional funder.

Projects welcomed are those that increase understanding of the causes of MS, find new effective treatments or prevention strategies, or improve care and services for people affected by MS. The MS Society is the UK's leading charity for people affected by MS and the largest charitable funder of MS research in the UK. It funds discovery and translational research, including its clinical trials programme and Octopus, the first multi-arm, multi-stage trial for progressive MS.

Daphne Jackson Fellowships offer the chance to return to research after a break of at least two years for family, caring or health reasons. They combine a personalised programme of retraining and mentorship, helping fellows rebuild confidence and skills so that talent and training are not lost and they can produce high-quality research.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria include a minimum of a PhD and a career break of at least two years. Applicants should have an interest in MS research and a potential supervisor willing to support their application.

What you get

The part-time, fixed-term fellowship lasts three years and pays £34,308 to £39,745 per annum pro rata, depending on qualifications, between spinal points 29 and 34 of the higher education single pay spine.

How to apply

Applicants outline their area of research interest and give the name and contact details of a potential supervisor, then send the submission to the Trust office, marking it clearly as an MS Society UK Research Fellowship Application. Following shortlisting by the Trust, the MS Society UK carries out an internal selection process to identify the preferred candidate.

Key dates

The closing date is Monday 19 October 2026.
