Overview

The Mozilla Foundation 2027–2028 Fellowship Programme offers a 12-month development opportunity for visionary innovators, technology developers, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and change-makers. Operating under the theme Imagining a Future Worth Building, the initiative targets individuals working on unconventional, ambitious, and transformative technology ideas that challenge current systems and promote digital rights, community ownership, and responsible innovation. The cohort focuses on seven specific areas, including neurotechnology, hard infrastructure, positive artificial intelligence outcomes, post-agentic web business models, shared security and audit infrastructure, sovereign artificial intelligence, and creative advocacy through a dedicated Independent Fellowship. Applicants whose proposals do not fit these categories may apply through a wildcard option.

Who can apply

The programme welcomes applications from extraordinary individuals as well as self-nominations and third-party nominations of outstanding technology innovators and emerging leaders. Candidates can apply through two distinct tracks depending on their professional and project development stage. Track I supports embedded fellows working with established civil society host organizations such as BASAibu in Indonesia, Fundación Kamanau in Chile, LAS Art Foundation in Germany, Quantum Village in the United States, and Slum & Rural Health Initiative in Nigeria. Track II is designed for independent innovators who want to pursue flexible, independent technology projects.

What you get

The Mozilla Foundation will award a total of 10 fellowships for the 2027–2028 cohort, providing successful participants with financial backing and access to a global network of more than 200 former fellows. Track I embedded fellows receive a total of US$100,000, which includes a US$75,000 stipend and a US$25,000 project budget, alongside institutional support and mentorship from host organizations. Track II independent fellows receive a total of US$125,000, consisting of a US$100,000 stipend and a US$25,000 project budget.

How to apply

The selection process begins with the submission of a Letter of Intent, which serves as the primary evaluation stage. Only shortlisted candidates are invited to submit full applications for further assessment. Nominations can also be submitted by individuals and organizations, and eligible nominees will receive instructions on how to submit their Letters of Intent. Interested participants can submit inquiries via email and must ensure their Letter of Intent is submitted by the stated deadline.

Key dates

The Letter of Intent submission deadline is 17 December 2026 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Invitations for full applications will be issued on 16 February 2027, followed by the full application deadline on 12 March 2027 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Final applicants will be notified on 30 April 2027, and the fellowship programme will officially commence on 1 June 2027 for a duration of 12 months.
