Overview

The Journalists-in-Residence Programme offers temporary relocation and professional support to journalists, media workers, documentary filmmakers, and press photographers who face harassment, intimidation, persecution, or professional pressure due to their work. Implemented by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom as part of the Media Freedom Rapid Response initiative, the programme takes place in Leipzig, Germany. The residency lasts for three months or up to six months, providing a safe and discreet environment for participants to rest, recover, continue their journalistic activities, and connect with other professionals.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants include media professionals who experience risks or pressure directly connected to their journalistic activities, provided they meet the professional experience, language ability, and country-of-residence requirements outlined in the call.

What you get

Selected participants receive a rent-free furnished apartment in Leipzig for the duration of the residency, along with a monthly stipend of €1,000 to cover basic living costs. Additional financial support covers basic health insurance, travel expenses to and from Leipzig, and visa costs. Participants may also gain access to a workplace in the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom office, subject to the programme's arrangements. Optional services that may be arranged according to individual needs include psychological counselling, digital security training, language courses, journalism-related workshops, and networking opportunities.

How to apply

Eligible applicants must submit the required application documents and demonstrate the necessary professional experience, language ability, and country-of-residence requirements.
