Overview

The Max Planck School of Cognition offers a fully funded doctoral program in Germany designed for academically outstanding and motivated students. The program provides an interdisciplinary research environment that investigates human cognition by connecting fields such as artificial intelligence, neuroscience, biology, genetics, psychology, linguistics, mathematics, physics, and philosophy. The doctoral program begins annually on 1 September, with the current application cycle dedicated to the 2027 intake.

Who can apply

The program welcomes exceptionally strong students with academic backgrounds relevant to cognition and related scientific disciplines. Applicants do not need to have studied a program specifically titled cognitive science, as candidates from a wide range of fields who demonstrate strong academic performance and research potential are considered.

Requirements

Applicants must submit their applications through the program online application portal. The required documents include academic certificates or proof of current enrolment for B.S. and M.S. degrees, a copy of a passport or identity card, and an academic curriculum vitae detailing academic achievements, research experience, skills, and relevant projects. Candidates must also provide a personal statement outlining their academic interests and motivation for applying, the names of three potential supervisors selected from the program fellows without contacting them prior to admission, and the contact details of two referees for recommendation letters.

Key dates

The application cycle for the 2027 intake opened on 1 September 2026. The multi-stage application process runs through September and March, with virtual interviews scheduled for 23 and 24 February 2027.
