Overview

The Institute for Law & AI (LawAI), an independent think tank that researches and advises on legal challenges created by artificial intelligence, runs a paid Summer Fellowship focused on United States law and policy. The ten-week fellowship takes place from June 14 to August 20, 2027, in Washington, DC, with a strong preference for in-person participation and remote arrangements considered case by case. A Convening Week runs June 21 to 25, 2027.

Fellows develop a project with a mentor, such as a policy brief, research report or law review article, or contribute to research and advisory work led by LawAI staff. Activities include legal research, policy analysis, drafting, presenting findings, reviewing other fellows' projects and attending regular team meetings. Some fellows may help advise policymakers, government bodies or private organizations.

Who can apply

LawAI welcomes applicants of varied backgrounds who understand legal principles relevant to AI regulation in US law and policy, shown through US legal study such as entering the first year of law school or through comparable professional experience. Prior AI law experience is not needed. Past fellows have included graduate law students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, career changers and legal academics. Fellows must participate full time for the full period. Applicants from outside the United States with relevant US legal experience or study are welcome, and LawAI will make reasonable efforts to support visa sponsorship.

What you get

Fellows receive a weekly subsidy of $2,000, with higher amounts possible for exceptional experience. Those relocating to Washington, DC receive a taxable $10,000 relocation and housing stipend that needs no receipts. Eligible travel for Convening Week and the Summer Institute on Law and AI in Washington is covered, along with mentorship, expert Q&A sessions, networking and career planning resources.

How to apply

The online application takes about twenty minutes. Candidates then complete an asynchronous exploratory interview of about twenty minutes and, if selected, a forty-five-minute project interview with a research staff member. Decisions are expected by mid-March.
