Overview

The Justice First Fellowship is a two-year programme designed for individuals dedicated to supporting marginalised communities, promoting access to justice, and creating positive change within the legal community. Fellows undertake work with host organisations across the United Kingdom, gaining practical experience while contributing to organisations that help people exercise their legal rights and overcome barriers such as financial hardship, social exclusion, and a lack of access to legal advice.

Who can apply

The programme is intended for candidates who demonstrate a commitment to improving access to justice, possess experience working with marginalised communities, and understand the issues affecting the populations they aim to serve. Applicants select two preferred host organisations from a provided list during the application process.

What you get

Selected participants secure a two-year professional opportunity as employees of their chosen host organisations, where they receive day-to-day supervision and workplace support. In addition to employment within host entities such as law centres and national charities, participants benefit from wider fellowship support, training, and professional development opportunities organised by The Legal Education Foundation and its partners.

How to apply

Candidates must submit their applications through a process that features an initial anonymised shortlisting stage to reduce bias. Shortlisted candidates are invited to participate in interviews directly with their selected host organisations, which may take place online or in person and can include a written task, a presentation, or both.

Key dates

The application period opens during the week commencing 12 October 2026 and closes on 14 December 2026. Subsequent interviews take place between 18 January and 5 February 2027. Final confirmation of selected fellows is scheduled for 15 March 2027, though most candidates are expected to receive notification earlier, leading up to a work start date in April 2027.
