Overview

The Institute of Peace and Diplomatic Studies offers a four-month remote research opportunity designed to help early-career scholars translate academic research into practical policy-oriented analysis. Participants collaborate with an Institute research centre, connect their academic interests to the centre's research agenda, and publish their work under the title of Non-Resident Research Fellow. The programme is conducted entirely online, allowing researchers to participate from their own country and time zone while contributing to Institute publications, seminars, and policy discussions. The fellowship is honorary and unpaid, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Who can apply

The programme is open worldwide to doctoral researchers, PhD holders, and eligible MPhil or research master's graduates. Applicants must hold a completed MPhil, MS, or research master's degree representing 18 years of education or the international equivalent, be currently enrolled in a PhD or doctoral programme, or have completed a doctorate. Candidates whose highest qualification is a taught master's degree equivalent to 16 years of education or a bachelor's degree are not eligible, and those still completing an MPhil do not yet qualify. Eligible disciplines include international relations, political science, peace and conflict studies, strategic, security or defence studies, area or regional studies, economics and international political economy, international law, public policy and governance, history, gender studies, and media, communication and diplomacy studies. Applicants must also have at least two published pieces, such as journal articles, book chapters, policy briefs, working papers, or recognised opinion pieces, alongside a single-authored writing sample and publishable written English proficiency.

What you get

Fellows gain the opportunity to work with a research centre, develop a research project aligned with institutional priorities, and publish their work under the title Non-Resident Research Fellow. The main required outputs include one policy paper and two commentaries, which are reviewed and edited by the Research Desk.

Requirements

Participants are expected to commit approximately 8 to 10 hours per week over the four-month duration. Applicants must propose research questions relevant to policymakers and practitioners that translate findings into practical policy analysis, supported by clear and evidence-based writing.
