Overview

The Internet Society Fellowship Program gives participants foundational knowledge about the Internet and helps them develop specialized expertise. The goal is to contribute to a stronger, more secure, and more accessible Internet. The program operates across three main tracks, which are Internet Policy and Mobilization, Internet Connectivity, and Internet Safety and Security. Each track features specialized learning opportunities, expert sessions, projects, and events to build practical knowledge and leadership skills.

Who can apply

Individuals interested in influencing Internet policies, expanding digital connectivity, improving cybersecurity, or driving community mobilization can apply. Specific sub-tracks have unique affiliations or professional focuses. For instance, applicants for the Community Mobilization sub-track must belong to an Internet Society chapter, Special Interest Group, or Standing Group. Professionals, advocates, and technical specialists seeking to strengthen digital infrastructure in underserved communities can also find the program valuable.

What you get

Participants gain a deep understanding of core Internet concepts, governance, and project implementation. The program equips fellows with leadership skills and practical knowledge in areas such as policy advocacy, resilient infrastructure, cybersecurity, and online safety. Fellows participate in specialized learning opportunities, expert sessions, projects, and events tailored to their chosen track.

Requirements

Applicants must complete designated foundational and track-specific courses before they can begin their fellowship application. Foundational topics include Internet infrastructure, Internet governance, online trust and safety, Internet impact, and project implementation. Depending on the chosen track and sub-track, participants undertake additional specialized training such as encryption, disability leadership in Internet governance, chapter management, advanced network operations, community network readiness, and internet security.

How to apply

Interested candidates must first select their preferred track and sub-track, then complete all required pre-fellowship training courses. The fellowship application cannot be started until these prerequisite courses are successfully finished.
