Overview

The Institute for Law and AI Summer Fellowship is a paid programme that lets law students, professionals and academics work at the leading edge of AI law and policy, with a particular focus on United States law and policy. It combines tailored mentorship with career planning and chances to apply legal thinking to current governance questions alongside policymakers, researchers and other leaders. Previous Summer Fellows have gone on to law and policy roles at the US Department of Commerce, leading AI companies, academia and think tanks, including LawAI itself.

What you get

The fellowship is designed to be in person in Washington, DC, and fellows are generally expected to be based there for the summer. Those who relocate receive a $10,000 relocation and housing stipend, treated as taxable income, with no receipts required. The weekly subsidy is $2,000, and candidates with exceptional experience or qualifications may be eligible for more. Fellows attend a Convening Week in Washington, DC from June 21 to 25 and the Summer Institute on Law and AI in July, with eligible travel costs covered, including flights, accommodation and meals. They also receive close mentorship from research staff and affiliates, question-and-answer sessions with experts, networking and career planning resources, and opportunities to explore future collaborations such as follow-on funding, event invitations and projects or job openings with LawAI.

Who can apply

Applicants should show a strong grasp of the legal principles that apply to AI regulation in US law and policy, through formal US legal study (for example an incoming 1L) or comparable professional experience. Prior AI-specific research experience is not required, but an interest in AI law and policy is. Past fellows have included graduate law students such as LLM or JD candidates, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, professionals moving into AI-focused roles in research, academia, government or industry, and legal academics.

Requirements

Fellows must be able to participate full time from June 14 to August 20, although adjustments may be considered in exceptional cases. They must also attend the Convening Week. Visa sponsorship will be supported with reasonable effort where possible, but participation depends on holding valid visa or immigration permissions for the place where the fellow will be based.

Key dates

The application form takes about 20 minutes and must be submitted by 11:59 pm ET on January 29, 2027. Late applications cannot be assessed.
