HP-UCL IOE Fellowship in AI in Education 2027
Overview
The HP-UCL IOE Fellowship in AI in Education 2027 equips senior policymakers and organisational leaders to lead AI transformation responsibly. As AI reshapes education, many leaders face high-stakes decisions without enough evidence, governance frameworks or understanding of the implications for learning, equity and trust. The programme brings together expertise in AI, learning sciences, policy, ethics and human-computer interaction, helping participants look beyond the hype and examine AI's impact on education and public institutions.
It is delivered as a hybrid fellowship over 12 months. It begins with weekly live online sessions on the foundations, opportunities and challenges of AI in education, covering framing AI in education systems, foundations of AI and human-AI interaction, ethics and responsible AI, governance, policy and procurement, learners, inclusion and equitable design, teachers and professional agency, evidence, implementation and scaling, and leadership clinics. These lead to a one-week residential in London, followed by nine months of mentoring on a capstone project tackling a live policy or implementation challenge from the fellow's own work.
What you get
All programme costs are covered on acceptance, excluding airfares and visas. Fellows learn with academics whose work informs AI in global education policy with UNESCO, the OECD, the Council of Europe and the European Commission, at UCL Institute of Education, which has ranked first in the world for Education in the QS World University Rankings for 13 consecutive years. They join a select international cohort and a global fellows network.
Who can apply
The fellowship suits senior education policymakers in ministries and agencies, regulators and inspectorate leaders, senior executives at international edtech companies, senior officials at international organisations, regional and local education leaders, leaders of school systems such as multi-academy trust and school group CEOs, and leaders of education non-profits, foundations and professional bodies, including unions. The stated geographies are Europe, Asia and Africa.
Requirements
Selection is competitive and considers the relevance of the applicant's role, leadership experience and potential for impact, capacity to take part in all activities, commitment to responsible, equitable and human-centred AI, the strength of the proposed project idea and the potential contribution to peer learning. The programme aims to build a diverse international cohort.
