Overview

The Hans De Wit Fellowship supports the academic mobility of early career researchers focusing on higher education studies. Established in 2022 and partially funded with seed funding donated by World Education Services, the program affiliates successful candidates with the Center for International Higher Education for one full calendar year, running from September to August. Selected participants travel to Boston for a three-month campus visit scheduled between September and June. During their time on site, Fellows interact with the broader Boston College community, including international visitors, and gain access to the physical and online library holdings of Boston College. In return, participants share their research expertise through publications, the seminar series, or with students in the Master of Arts program.

Who can apply

Early career researchers working in higher education studies are eligible, provided they have completed their doctoral degree within the previous five years. Preference is given to applicants from marginalized backgrounds, including individuals with refugee status, those based in the Global South, and those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

What you get

The award provides one fellowship per academic year. Benefits include reimbursement for round-trip economy class airfare to and from Boston and coverage for fees related to processing necessary visa paperwork. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $3,500 for the duration of the three months in Boston to help cover medical insurance and housing costs. While on campus, participants are given a designated desk, printing privileges, and the use of a desktop computer if needed. Fellows must arrange their own housing and visa paperwork independently, though institutional support documentation is supplied by the Boston College Office of International Students and Scholars.

How to apply

Applicants must send their application materials via email to internationalhighered at bc dot edu. The required documentation includes a letter of interest detailing the expected benefits of the fellowship, ways the applicant will contribute to the intellectual life of the Center and Boston College communities, and any relevant background details concerning eligibility. Candidates must also submit a current curriculum vitae featuring a colleague reference who can speak about their scholarly work, alongside a completed Visiting Scholar application form.

Key dates

The application deadline is November 15, 2026. The fellowship period spans one calendar year from September to August, with the mandatory three-month campus visit taking place between September and June.
