Overview

The Fulbright U.S. ASEAN Visiting Scholar Initiative is a short-term research and professional exchange programme that enables participants to conduct research at institutions in the United States. Launched in 2012, the initiative aims to deepen people-to-people engagement, strengthen educational ties, and build stronger academic and professional connections between the United States and Southeast Asia. Selected scholars undertake research for up to four months during the first half of 2028, focusing on challenges and opportunities relevant to the wider ASEAN region and the relationship between the United States and ASEAN member states.

Who can apply

The programme is intended for established academics and professionals rather than applicants seeking funding for conventional degrees. Eligible participants include university faculty members and researchers, government officials, journalists and media professionals, think tank professionals, non-governmental organisation professionals, and private-sector professionals working on economic cooperation, trade, technology, or related priorities. Applicants are expected to demonstrate substantial academic or professional accomplishment, possess proficiency in English, and reside in an eligible ASEAN country during the application and selection process before returning to an ASEAN member state after completing the programme.

What you get

Participants receive a research placement of up to four months at a United States host institution during the first half of 2028. The experience provides an opportunity to expand research, engage with U.S. institutions, deepen expertise, develop research partnerships, and contribute professional insights to discussions about regional cooperation, public policy, economic development, and other shared priorities.
