Overview

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder offers fellowship opportunities for postdoctoral researchers and senior scientists. The Visiting Fellows Program brings international researchers to Boulder, Colorado, to participate in an interdisciplinary community alongside scientists from the university and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The initiative supports collaborative investigations addressing environmental and climate challenges, and applications are particularly encouraged from individuals belonging to groups historically under-represented in environmental sciences.

Who can apply

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowship must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline, completed no more than four years prior to the application date, or successfully defend and obtain thesis approval before the appointment begins. Current or former University of Colorado Boulder graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, as well as current or former CIRES Visiting Fellows, are not eligible. Exceptions to the four-year post-PhD limit may be considered for career interruptions due to caregiving or other exceptional circumstances.

What you get

Postdoctoral fellows receive a two-year research appointment with a first-year annual salary of $70,000, with second-year increases determined by University of Colorado campus adjustments. Additional provisions include up to $8,000 for approved research activities, a modest relocation stipend for the individual researcher, and a laptop provided separately from the research budget.

Requirements

Candidates must submit a two-page curriculum vitae using the National Science Foundation template, academic transcripts, and a one-to-two-page cover letter detailing research motivations, expected start dates, proposed sponsors and collaborators, and alignment with the CIRES Strategic Plan. Applicants must also provide a research proposal of up to three pages covering methodology, timelines, and scientific justification, alongside three letters of recommendation. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact potential research sponsors before applying.

Key dates

Applications open on 19 October 2026 and close on 21 December 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
