AWC Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships 2027–28 at Duke, Johns Hopkins SAIS and UT Austin: Fully Funded Research Fellowship Opportunity for Doctoral Scholars
Overview
The America in the World Consortium Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships provide fully funded research opportunities for scholars examining American grand strategy, U.S. foreign policy, international affairs, national security, geopolitics, and related policy questions. Offered through a partnership of leading institutions including Duke University, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and the University of Texas at Austin, the program brings together policy-interested researchers from multiple academic disciplines to prepare them for major geopolitical and policy challenges. Successful candidates spend a substantial portion of their time pursuing original research and writing while participating in the intellectual life and programming of their host institution, beginning in August 2027.
Who can apply
The predoctoral fellowship is designed for doctoral students who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program, have passed their comprehensive, preliminary, or qualifying examinations, and have advanced to the doctoral candidacy or dissertation-writing stage. The postdoctoral fellowship is intended for researchers who have completed their doctoral degree or will have completed it by the required date. The program encourages applications from all academic disciplines, with preference given to history, political science, and classics, provided the applicant's research has a direct connection to American grand strategy, foreign policy, international relations, national security, geopolitics, global affairs, policy and institutions, international history, strategic studies, or political philosophy.
What you get
Fellows receive a competitive stipend, access to campus facilities and resources, and dedicated office or workstation space at their host institution. Researchers are placed within an active university research environment associated with major research centers, including the Program in American Grand Strategy at Duke University, the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins University, and the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin.
