Apply for the SJN/MIT Climate Journalism Fellowship 2027: $7,500 Stipend for U.S.-Based Journalists — Up to 10 Positions Available
Overview
The SJN/MIT Climate Journalism Fellowship is an eight-month programme designed to support journalists reporting on practical responses to climate change. Jointly organized by the Solutions Journalism Network and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the initiative selects 10 participants to produce ambitious, well-researched local stories examining climate solutions and their effects on communities. The programme aims to strengthen public understanding of climate change by showing how solutions work in real communities rather than focusing exclusively on environmental disasters.
Who can apply
The fellowship is open to journalists based in the United States who are interested in producing rigorous local reporting on climate solutions. Previous experience in climate or environmental journalism is valued but is not a requirement, welcoming professionals working in beats such as local government, business, agriculture, energy, health, or community affairs. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in reporting grounded in research and the experiences of communities where climate solutions are being implemented.
What you get
Selected fellows receive a $7,500 stipend during the eight-month programme. Participants also obtain extensive science journalism training from MIT, climate-focused training-of-trainers activities, and an in-person gathering at the Society of Environmental Journalists conference in April. Additionally, the programme offers opportunities for wider story distribution through a partnership with the Public News Service, allowing fellows to extend the reach of their reporting.
How to apply
Interested journalists must submit their applications by visiting the Solutions Journalism Network website and following the link to the fellowship application page.
Key dates
The application deadline is October 26, 2026. An Ask Me Anything session is scheduled for October 14 for prospective applicants. An in-person conference gathering takes place in April.
