Apply for the HKU Global South Fellowship Scheme 2026/27: Funding for Researchers to Visit the University of Hong Kong
Overview
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong operates the Global South Fellowship Scheme to promote international academic exchange, collaborative research, and knowledge-sharing between scholars from the Global South and faculty members at the university. Up to 10 fellows are selected per academic year. The programme allows successful applicants to spend between one and three months in Hong Kong working alongside an academic host to develop research collaborations and participate in university academic activities.
Who can apply
The scheme is open to professoriate staff, including Assistant Professors and above, who are affiliated with universities or comparable institutions in the Global South. Preference is given to junior scholars and researchers who demonstrate the potential to establish longer-term collaborations with their host units. Applicants must have a relevant research record and professional achievements, identify an appropriate academic host within the Faculty of Social Sciences, and obtain written consent from that host prior to submitting an application.
What you get
Selected fellows receive a remuneration package that includes return economy-class airfare of up to HK$10,000, reimbursed according to scheme arrangements. A daily allowance of HK$1,500 is provided for the entire fellowship period, which is inclusive of accommodation and intended to cover relevant living expenses. The fellowship also covers the reimbursement of visa application fees. Fellows are responsible for arranging any additional funding needed for expenses not covered by this package.
Key dates
Applications for the second round of the 2026/27 academic year close on 22 November 2026, Hong Kong Time. Results for this round will be announced by the end of December 2026. Visits under this round are expected to begin in March 2027 or later, falling within the spring semester period of February to June.
