Overview

The DSTI–NRF Policy Fellowship Programme offers a 24-month opportunity for early- and mid-career researchers to apply their academic expertise to public policy development and implementation. Organised jointly by the National Research Foundation and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, the initiative places fellows within designated host institutions to tackle South Africa’s socioeconomic and developmental challenges through evidence-informed planning, policy analysis, and institutional development.

Who can apply

The fellowship is intended primarily for South African citizens and permanent residents, though limited exceptional consideration is available for non-South African applicants. Eligible candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree within the past 10 years. Applicants are required to select up to three potential host institutions during the application process and must consider the physical location of their preferred choices, as regular in-person attendance may be required.

What you get

Successful applicants receive fellowship funding for up to 24 months, with an annual award value ranging from R240,000 to R320,000. In addition to financial support, the programme provides policy engagement, professional training, capacity development, cross-sectoral networking, and opportunities for international exposure.

Requirements

Participants must contribute their research knowledge to real-world policy work across a variety of supported thematic areas, which include science, technology and innovation policy; energy, climate change and just transition; digital transformation and artificial intelligence; urban development and local government; health and public health systems; agriculture, food systems and rural development; environment and natural resources; social development, education and human capital; public administration and institutional reform; and international relations and science diplomacy.

Key dates

The application deadline is 17 November 2026.
