Overview

The America in the World Consortium (AWC) is a partnership of Duke University, Johns Hopkins SAIS and the University of Texas at Austin. It seeks applications from current PhD students for its predoctoral fellowship for 2027-2028. The Consortium aims to create more vibrant debate among policy-interested scholars about America's role in the world, to prepare the next generation to face geopolitical challenges and advance American national interests abroad, and to support an intellectually diverse research community across disciplines.

The fellowship lets advanced PhD students live and work for one year at one of three partner institutions: the Program in American Grand Strategy at Duke University, the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins SAIS, or the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin.

What you get

The fellowship offers a competitive stipend, access to campus facilities and a wide range of campus resources.

Who can apply

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme, and must have passed their comprehensive, preliminary or qualifying exams and advanced to doctoral candidacy by the time of application. Applicants from all disciplines whose research bears directly on American grand strategy, broadly defined, are welcome. Preference goes to doctoral candidates in history, political science, public policy, classics and political philosophy whose research has a strong policy connection.

How to apply

Applicants submit a two-page cover letter stating which Consortium school or schools they would like to be based at, a CV, a graduate school transcript, and the names of three references who would write a recommendation letter if asked by the review committee. They must also submit an article or writing sample that represents an existing contribution to the field of American grand strategy.

Key dates

The application deadline is December 1, 2026.
