AI and National Security Convergence Fellowship 2026-2027
Overview
The AI and National Security Convergence Fellowship 2026-2027 is a program designed to develop the capacity of 15 mid-career professionals to maintain human control over artificial intelligence. Offered by the Converging Risks Lab, which is a unit of the Council on Strategic Risks, in partnership with the Future of Life Institute, the program consists of four core elements: a bootcamp, a staff ride, scenario exercises, and networking events. Most in-person gatherings occur in downtown Washington, DC.
Who can apply
The program targets mid-career individuals possessing 10 to 15 years of professional or advanced academic experience. Eligible applicant backgrounds include diplomacy, defense, international relations, legal fields, scientific or technical disciplines related to AI security, experience with the US Congress, or work in local, state, or US federal government. Prior knowledge of AI is beneficial but not required. Applicants must be US citizens or Washington, DC-based foreign nationals from allied nations.
Requirements
Participants must reside within the Washington, DC area and maintain the ability to attend scheduled meetings and events in downtown DC. Fellows must confirm their availability for all bootcamp meetings, which consist of seven virtual sessions and seven in-person sessions held at the Council on Strategic Risks offices in Farragut Square. While the program accommodates work schedules and permits up to five absences for excusable reasons, missing more than six sessions disqualifies a participant from claiming alumni status. Fellows must also be able to join two scenario exercises, a capstone matrix game, kick-off and closing dinners, and a domestic trip visiting frontier AI labs and other relevant sites.
What you get
Selected Fellows receive coverage for airfare, lodging, and meals associated with the domestic staff ride. Participants gain access to networking opportunities with peers, senior officials, and other professionals, including six senior leaders who act as Senior Advisors to the program.
How to apply
Interested candidates must submit a completed application form, upload a resume or CV, and provide two references. Cover letters are not required. Submissions can be modified until the closing time.
Key dates
Applications must be submitted by 5 pm Eastern Daylight Time on October 28, 2026.
