Overview

The United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Latin America and the Caribbean is a professional training programme designed to strengthen knowledge and understanding of international law among qualified regional professionals. Organised by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in cooperation with the Government of Chile and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the course provides participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of international law and its practical application. The programme accommodates up to 25 participants, including a limited number of self-funded places.

Who can apply

Applications are open to qualified candidates from United Nations Member States belonging to the Latin American and Caribbean Group. The programme is intended primarily for professionals who have already acquired practical experience in the field rather than students or individuals without professional legal experience. Applicants must possess a legal background, relevant professional experience in international law, and fluency in English. Selected participants must be able to attend the entire programme, as partial attendance is not permitted.

What you get

Selected fellowship recipients receive financial support that covers international economy-class travel, accommodation, breakfast and lunch, medical insurance, and training materials. Recipients also receive a modest stipend calculated in accordance with United Nations regulations to assist with other living expenses such as local public transportation. Self-funded participants receive the same training, programme activities, training materials, and completion certificates as fellowship recipients, but must cover all their own travel, accommodation, insurance, and living costs.

Requirements

Applicants must have a legal background, relevant professional experience in international law, and fluency in English. Candidates must also be able to commit to attending the entire course in person.

Key dates

The application deadline is 15 December 2026. The 2027 edition of the course will take place from 12 May to 4 June 2027.
