10 Fully Funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Climate and Development at the University of Cape Town 2027
Overview
The Africa Climate Collaborative, hosted by the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town, offers 10 fully funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Climate and Development. The initiative is part of a three-year Postdoctoral Researcher Programme intended to support recent African PhD graduates in building independent careers in fields such as climate research, sustainable development, environmental policy, health, economics, and marine science. Fellows work in a cohort-based model alongside other early-career African researchers, attached to specific University of Cape Town departments or research laboratories under the guidance of experienced mentors.
Who can apply
The programme is open to recent African PhD graduates looking to build careers in climate research and related fields. Applicants must select a single research topic from the official call when applying, as applying to more than one topic may result in disqualification. Candidates should carefully examine the disciplinary requirements attached to their chosen topic before submitting.
What you get
Successful fellows receive a fully funded package consisting of a tax-free annual stipend of R380,000 for the duration of the three-year programme. Additionally, fellows can receive up to R130,000 over the three-year period, subject to suitable motivation, to cover eligible expenses such as relocation costs, medical insurance, research expenses, and conference attendance. Participants also gain access to structured researcher development training, mentorship from experienced academics, and peer-learning activities within a cohort of early-career researchers.
